Usos de "would"

I would marry him if I loved him.

Me casaría con él si lo quisiera.

We'd have called the police if I had seen them.

Would you open the window?

¿Quieres abrir la ventana?.

Would he have another cup of tea?

She would go to the school at eight o'clock.

Solía ir al colegio a las 8.

Con esta idea de hábito o costumbre se puede usar también "used to".

They would play/used to play tennis every Sunday.

Solían jugar al tenis todos los domingos.

Sin embargo, para referirse a situaciones pasadas (no hechos que sucedían habitualmente) se emplea 'used to' en lugar de 'would'.

She used to live in New York (would es incorrecto).

Solía vivir en Nueva York.

I used to have a red Porsche. (would es incorrecto).

She would not tell me the truth.

No quería decirme la verdad.

5  Para expresar suposición o predicción.

He would be my father.

Podría ser mi padre.
