Comparing Integers

Integers are ordered. If two numbers are represented graphically, the larger integer is situated to the right, and the smaller integer is to the left.

Criteria for Ordering Integers

1. All negative numbers are less than zero.

−7 < 0

2. All positive numbers are greater than zero.

7 > 0

3. A negative integer is larger if it has a lower absolute value.

−7 > −10   |−7| < |−10|

4. A positive integer is larger if it has a greatest absolute value.

10 > 7   |10| > |7|
